One thing that I love about studying the femininity of the Holy Spirit is that it is a topic that reaches across denominations. Take for instance, the book I’m currently reading (I tend to read numerous books at one time!) called Woman: Image of the Holy Spirit, written by a Catholic woman by the name of Joan P. Schaupp.
This short, easy-to-read book is a great place to start if you want to know what all this talk about “the femininity of the Holy Spirit” is all about. What I personally like about this book is how Joan shares her journey to finding the feminine in God, relaying all those wonderful questions that we girls often wrestle with such as, “How do I reflect God? Is it wrong to view God as not just masculine but also feminine? Does the Bible tell of only a masculine God? Why do I feel so akin to the Holy Spirit who “gives birth” and is considered “the helper”? And, why is Mary so often attributed the work of the Holy Spirit (as intercessor and Christ’s helper)–could it be because femininity so fits the Spirit?
There are some wonderful nuggets of discovery in this small book, such as describing the Spirit as “The Rib of the Logos,” reminding us that the Holy Spirit came forth from our spiritual Adam (Jesus), just as woman came forth from the body of Adam. She also describes the Holy Spirit and Christ as “The Two Hands of God,” reminding us that God has sent both the Word and Wisdom to us.I personally love the way she describes Jesus as “Wisdom’s crowning achievement.”
Mrs. Schaupp gently encourages us, describing this as an emerging revelation–“a new season of the Spirit is budding.” And as I’ve recently learned, God loves to do new things. Unfortunately, sometimes we’re not always so good at receiving them…but, in our defense, I do think we’re getting better.
“Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.” (NRSV Matt 13:52)
Have a great day!
